lost in transit is an rpg maker visual novel made by thorhighheels of chill-and-positive-gaming-youtube-videos fame (and also creator of some banger music). it's a one hour-ish experience about trains, capitalism, conspiracies and lesbians.
the game follows marzipan, a nurse working in a hospital in a city called beton gardens. the city (and it's public transport) is controlled by a shadowy corporation called POPEGOD. in the beginning, we learn via news report that the train network has been suffering repeated cases of disappearing commuter trains, which is the mystery we're uncovering throughout the plot of the game. hint: the shadowy corporation may be involved, actually.
i ended up being a big big fan of the art style for the vn sections of the game. it marries a combination of processed photos, simple 3d modeling and ms paint-style drawn art into a cohesive style, sometimes also with the off-beat typography and layout work ever-present in her youtube videos. the vn sections are broken up by a few short rpg maker-typical levels that are basically just simple scene-setting "walk from a to b" sections. the soundtrack is full of well-fitting, atmospheric instrumental bangers and really lifts up the game.
the story itself is interesting enough to follow for the runtime of the game. i think my favorite moment here comes when marzipan, while commuting to work on a train, starts to spiral into a panic attack thinking about the possibility of something happening to the train she is on. it's a very realistic description of such a spiral and got to me. that aside, there's a cute little romance happening, even though i didn't vibe with the 00s IM-chat style voice the love interest burgundy was written with.
overall i had a good time with this game!! good vibes, good atmosphere.
